THE3-4101 Parish ministry / Theology of Pastoral Care

That the student understands and appreciates the Scriptural and Confessional foundations that undergird, inform and motivate the work of a pastor in the Lutheran Church, and the spiritual needs of people to whom pastoral ministry is offered.

THE4-4102  Christian Ethics

The purpose of this unit is to give students an understanding of the nature, basis, and norms of Christian ethics and in particular an appreciation of the Lutheran ethos, its distinctive theological emphases, and the way the Lutheran church approaches ethical issues. 

THE4-4103 Church History 4 (PNG Church history)

The establishment and growth of the church in Papua New Guinea, with a special emphasis on the development of the Lutheran churches from 1886 to the present.

THE2-4104  Old Testament exegesis 2 (Psalms / Wisdom literature)

This unit teaches students to read, interpret and understand the psalms according to their genre, setting and structure, so that they can appreciate the liturgical, devotional and pastoral use of the Psalter in the life of the church.  The course includes:  Yet to be Posted

THE2-4205  New Testament exegesis 2 (Pauline letters)

The content for the unit includes:

  • data on Paul’s life and chronology, and the geography of his travels;
  • workshops on exegetical method;
  • introduction to the Pauline letters, especially on the structure and main themes of the chief letters of the apostle;
  • exegetical workshops on key texts of First Corinthians and Romans;
  • summaries of Paul’s theological thought and its place within early Christianity;
  • steps in moving from text to sermon.

THE2-4206 Old Testament exegesis 3            (Prophets)

The course will demonstrate the relevance of the Old Testament prophetical writings for the issues of today and for teaching and preaching.  The course will cover the following areas:

  • The history of Old Testament prophecy.
  • Analysis of the forms of the prophetic literature.
  • The peculiar features of each of the prophets, and their call.
  • The relationship of the prophets to covenant, worship, and kingship in ancient  Israel.
  • Applications of prophecy for church and society today.

THE2-4207 New Testament exegesis 3 (John Peter Hebrews Revelation)

This unit is designed to assist students to come to appreciate the theological depth and pastoral wisdom of selected New Testament writers, noting how pastoral theology in the New Testament is the product of the interface between situation and tradition. Students are given opportunity to explore how distinct but related theologies in the New Testament are relevant for the church today, especially for the pastoral task of proclamation, worship and mission.

The unit will provide studies on  the literary composition, setting and message of selected New Testament writings and the importance of central themes in these writings for the worship and mission of the church today.

THE4-4208 Sanctification

The purpose of this unit is to introduce students to the theology of the third article of the Apostles’ Creed, within a trinitarian framework, and from a biblical and dogmatic perspective. While the unit will be ecumenical in scope, the focus will be on the Lutheran emphasis in the various doctrines covered by the third article. The content of the unit includes:

  • person and work of the Holy Spirit
  • justification and sanctification
  • repentance and conversion
  • the church and the royal priesthood
  • the public ministry
  • the means of salvation
  • baptism
  • the eucharist
  • eschatology
